The
ISS was
founded in the U.S.A. in 2004 to give Shaw Studies more of an international
reach and perspective. The acronym “ISS” emphasizes Bernard Shaw’s
continuing presence as a talkative spirit with very relevant things to say,
often of the hyperbolic, satiric, paradoxical, and ironic
sort. “Smiling comedy,” he called it.

SYMPOSIUM:
The
Shaw Festival Theatre (shawfest.com), in the wonderful town of
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, has announced a full season of plays for
2023, including Shaw’s VILLAGE WOOING and THE
APPLE CART. The 2023 Symposium will
take place on July 21-22-23. The International Shaw Society and the Shaw Festival welcome
presenters and attendees to the 20th annual summer Shaw Symposium. Zoom access can be provided for those who cannot
attend the in-person panels. ISS Vice President Jennifer Buckley says
the Symposium will be “Focused on Bernard Shaw’s works, his
contemporaries, and his legacies, featuring new scholarship relating to
plays included in the Shaw Festival’s 2023 season. We especially invite papers treating the plays
that will be performed during the Symposium: Shaw’s The Apple Cart and Village
Wooing, as well as John Millington Synge’s Playboy of the Western
World. We also welcome proposals for talks about other playwrights
featured during the 2023 season, including Edith Wharton, Noel Coward, Tom
Stoppard, and James Baldwin; ideally, such proposals will situate those
writers and their works within a context that plausibly includes Shaw.
Please see https://www.shawfest.com/2023-season/ for a full list of productions. Please send proposals of
no more than 300 words and CVs to Jennifer-buckley@uiowa.edu by March 1, 2023. Information about travel grants and
